Florida History

Today we went North, near Gainesville, to a little town that was very quaint - called Micanopy.

We had lunch at a cute place called Coffee and Cream and ate on the porch.

After lunch we walked in and out of the antique stores.

After lunch and our walk, we went to the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park.  Marjorie was a Pulitzer Prize winning author.  The Yearling is the work she is most identified with.  Terry and I heard someone speak about her last year, while in The Villages, so this was a natural stop for us.

We are going to try to get one or two of her books to read, as we are not familiar with her writing.

The state park is near where we had lunch.  It has an entry fee that is on the honor system.  You put $3 in an envelope and put the envelope into a box.  There is a part of the envelope that you put on your windshield.

The house is called Cross Creek and the above is something Marjorie wrote.  You see this as you enter the property.

The house has a porch to die for and on which she did a lot of her writing.  There are orange trees and roosters and a tenants' house on the grounds.  Her rusted out car, with 1940 license plate is still there in the carport.  An outhouse is also on the property.  It's said that when she entertained she took the seat at the table facing the outhouse so her guests did not have to look at it during dinner.

When she updated the house to indoor plumbing, she held a party with the tub filled with ice and "soda" a tray of glasses on the sink and red roses in the commode!

She also had a built-in bar!  My type of lady!
